Dungeness Crab

Here in CA everyone knows this time of year is crab season.  Dungeness Crab season. There's usually a ton of it in the stores by now, but this season there was a slow start, so we haven't had that much. One thing I do know though is cooking crab is only half the battle. Clean, cook, clean then eat. It's the cleaning of the crab, the getting to the meat of the crab that can turn anyone off the tasty meal in a flash.
Have no fear though! I'll take you on a Crab cleaning tour so you won't be to shy of doing it yourself!

First get a crab,

Bad Mr. Crab!

After it's cooked which this one is already,(Boil a live Dungeness for 15-18 minutes in salty water) You'll flip it over and take the legs off. That's the easy part. You'll just have to crack the legs open to get the meat.

Now you have something that looks like this. Yeah it's not the prettiest,
You want to grab the shell under and remove it from the body

Now it's time to pop the top!
Give it a good rinse so you can see what your looking at.
These are the gills, you do not want to eat them. So take these off and rinse the center out well.

Now you should have a cleaned crab that looks something like this. You now need to break it in half and start pulling meat out.

That's all really good meat, you just have to dig it on out. I didn't get a good picture of the meat after it was pulled as it's so time consuming and well, four kids, starving, begging for food *sigh*
Leg meat on the right, and the rest on the left.
We were so hungry by the time we got all the meat out I didn't even pull the garlic butter out to use, we ate it plain and it was just as yummy! Though really, try some melted butter, if you like garlic make it garlic butter and have at it!
 Enjoy!

Mega Bloks Party!

Mega Bloks rule no matter what the kids are playing. I mean, really the first time we got any Mega Bloks was when my oldest was two. Now three kids later Mega Bloks are still at the top of the play list. They don't ever seem to lose any interest.

I got to host a Mega Bloks Party Mommy Party and it was a building blast of fun! You can build, crash, build and crash again. I love the there's vehicles now, even people! Maybe there was before and I missed the, but these are super cute. Boats, trackers, buses, they even come in pink :)

Each vehicle opens up with more blocks!
The Play and Go Table is a blast, I thought it was just a table and they'd just build ontop of it. Wrong! It opens up :) The kids figured it out in a flash,

It opens up and hold more blocks! The center star turns to lock the covers (four of them) into place. Not alot of room in there but it's enough for added play as well as space for blocks being stored. The table legs easily fold down. You just pinch the plastic and your all set. I say Easily because I've had "fold & go" tables before, they just don't fold easily enough. This one does. Easy to store out of the way when not is use.

It's a fun table! It's great for toddlers, isn't too high, isn't too short either, so I think it's perfect for 1-3, though I know a few older kids who got just as much fun out of this as the younger ones did. Hours of fun right here, really, they just don't ever get tired of playing with the Mega Bloks.
The New
Pull Along Musical Pirate Ship
I like the cute little shark, and it can be used with the Mega Bloks, So more building!
Along with our building bloks we had build a sandwich as well as Cracker Towers to eat.

The kids had a blast, so did the parents. Mega Bloks would be a wonderful gift for your toddlers this Holiday, you can find them pretty much at any toy store, Walmart, Target, Amazon.com has a bunch of Mega Bloks as well. You can find the Play 'n Go Table, Pull Along Musical Pirate Ship, and some bags of Mega Bloks both primary colors or pink!
Enjoy some building with the kids and watch the hours of fun they can get out of some Mega Bloks!

Clean by Green with Quickie

It's Holiday Season, and if your anything like me you are always, always cleaning! This year sparked a new rise of green products, in this house. I've gone from changing things completely around when my daughter just can't due away with skin reactions. The more I change the better it eases at times.
Still doesn't change my cleaning habits though, everyday all day long. One minute the room is clean the next it's a pile of toys or juice and worse, which I just won't mention.

I was delighted, no excited to have been given the chance to try out a Green Cleaning kit By Quickie! My favorite part of this kit is this Everything is washable. Ta-Da!! You know how many paper towels a family of 6 can go through? Yeah, it's alot and I hate knowing just how much of it happens just by cleaning.
The Green Cleaning Kit was awesome

From the top left, the all purpose microfiber cleaning sponges, the household microfiber cloth multi-pack,the Cookware sponges, and blind duster (the cloth comes off of this as well for easy cleaning) in the middle is the Chenille Dust mitt, then you have the hardwood floor mop as well as the microfiber twist mop.

There's 4 clothes that each have a different texture that do their own cleaning tricks. Not tricks really, but still, each one of them has a different purpose. Ones for dust and polishing, one for stainless steel, one for kitchen and bath,  and another is for windows or glass surfaces. I even got the kids into the cleaning spree.

I was surprised it took all the streaks and marks off without anything. Just scrub and it's gone. For some tough marks though a little water took them right off and no streaks left behind! Windows are hard to clean around kids, you can't use a chemical spray, as they are always touching it, licking it (gross) and who knows what else. This kit took that problem right out !

The chenille dust mitt is super fun, I'm telling you my kids were eager to clean so I let them have at it. They walked around wiggling the hand duster against things and inspected everything to make sure it did it's job.
The kitchen sponges are wonderful, I normally hate sponges as they just turn greasy, start to smell and fall apart! What good is that? The Quickie cookware sponges not only hold up to tough messes they are easily tossed into the wash and come out looking like new.You can just wash them in a sink full of hot water even. There's also all purpose sponges, which can be used for just about anything, I put one in each bathroom. They are super soft, yet tough on anything you throw at it.

The mops, oh my, how I love thee! I'll admit first off that I used to have one of those wet jet mops that you pull the pad like thing off and toss it. Sure they cleaned, but you need to buy the pads, plus the cleaner just for this one mop. Where's the win in that? Certainly not any ones wallet.
What happened to using the good old hot soapy water and bucket with a mop? I've been converted back to action with the good old ways of moping floors with Quickie. I like it,the twist mop is easy to clean, ring out the water and toss it into the wash.

The  Microfiber hardwood Floor Mop
The Twist Mop is a breeze and the Hardwood Floor mop is even easier. I don't have hard wood floors, I have tile in some places and this works wonderfully! You just squirt it till dampened, and wipe away. The cloth comes off easily and can be cleaned and put right back on for next use.
I like using it in the front entry as it's been rainy mostly here, my kids muddy footprints mark the floor at least 4 times a day. This is an easy clean up and less hassle to grab the twist mop when I just need a quick clean.

All the Quickie Green cleaning tools have been used as well as washed a couple times, they seem to bounce back to life and I've had no trouble with wear and tear yet. Much better than a traditional sponge by a land slide.

The Quickie Green Cleaning Kit is made of Microfiber, which allows to scrub surfaces easier catching more dirt and grime in it's thicker fibers.

Why not go Green this Holiday Season and take the plunge into an easier and friendly way of cleaning with no chemicals! Toss the paper towels and give Quickie a try, you'll be surprised at how easy it can be once you try!

Check out the rest of the Microfiber products by Quickie, you can find them at most stores with the cleaning supplies.

Episencial Baby Skin Care

Episencial Baby Skin Care

Talk about a bounty of topics to talk about. Babies, Mommies and skin care products bring together a world of talking. The stories you can imagine can get get a little crazy, because well kids are messy, everything about them is messy even sloppy kisses. Us Moms, Love it like nothing else in the world!

Episencial provided some wonderful party favors for my fellow Moms, playful foaming wash that is gentle to the kids eyes. Bubble bath, a really creamy body butter lotion and some other wonderful things to use with the kids.

The best thing about the Episencial products were they are natural as well as green friendly. It’s becoming more and more important for my own family not just others to keep everything as natural as possible. With kids who can easily break out from other soaps or even by it’s smell due to chemicals within it, I’m glad I’m finding more and more brands I can trust with my kids.
Episencial has done this by sticking with natural ingredients that you can not only name but each have a purpose for being there. Some of the ingredients used are, tea tree oil, which is a wonderful thing to have around the house anyways, Shea butter, honey, Aloe Vera leaf juice, and Rose water. Each ingredients has it’s use for keeping babies skin clean, refreshed as well as protected!

All the bath soaps including the bubble bath are gentle and safe on the eyes, so no stinging and screaming with a little splash here and there. The lotions and Balm sooth, protect and are very long lasting without any greasy feeling.

I had a wonderful time being able to show the products to friends as well as give them plenty to take home with them and use in their own home.

Thank you Episencial for hosting my Mommy Party!
You Can check out the complete product line as well as read more at their website here at Episencial , Green Organic Natural Baby Skin Care Products

**Disclosure- I was given the items above to host a Mommy Party.   No monetary compensation was received for this post. I did not have to write an positive review, Any and all opinions are and will always be my own.*

A Word to the End Time Church - Book Review

· A Word to the End -Time Church
· By Georgie Newman
· ISBN # 1935265024
· VMI Publishers (March 1, 2010)  www.vmipublishers.com

· $14.99

“Never before in history have we needed to take stock of what we believe, why we believe and how we live. As a collective, the human race is rushing towards a culmination of a time that will seal our futures forever. Yet only individually can each of us ensure our future. This book points out the dangers and errors of embracing teachings just because the majority is running with it; we need not be part of the status quo. It demonstrates how to take the road less traveled that leads to victory ensuring a safe and glorious future. It is warning of false prophets, lukewarm living and relinquishing our responsibility by following a particular teaching. Don’t wait till later, because later may be too late. “

My Take on Georgie Newman's Book
Though I do not completely agree with Newman on this issue she makes very fine points on the end of times. Where will we all be during this time? Will we be depending on someone else, or will we all choose to take strength in our own faith and not falter? The book challenges readers to re-examine the standing faith with God.
Her writing is true to the bible as it’s written and she’s laid out some very important points. In one of her statements she points out how hard it is for some to accept Christ just as it is to accept anything in life. Whether fear, pride or other things stopping us from embracing life choices everyone deals with this tough decision at some point in time. It is very true, even Christians true to their beliefs have a hard time believing things. She makes a good point that alot of people these days fall into, saying they believe yet they are living their life half-heartily. I think as a parent I teach my kids to go in with everything, not just part way. Everyone needs to put their whole being into what they believe, what ever that is. I myself don't know the point on going at something halfway, wouldn't you end up falling short before you even tried? Go at it with drive, believe in it, as well as yourself, the outcome depends on you. Choose your path yourself, don't let someone else choose it for you.

This book makes a good read and a good study and discuss while going back to find the truth for yourself. Whether you believe or not she makes a good eye opener with her book. Do not rely on others when ever the time is coming, take responsibility for what you believe and prepare no matter what the cost in the future.

The book would make an interesting read for anyone questioning themselves as well as what could happen in the future. Though we do not know when the end will come, Georgie gives a good start on focusing on how to be prepared for it.

Make 5 Dinners in ONE hour Giveaway!

We all at one point come to that annoying question what‘s for dinner? In our busy lives, going to and from places dinner ends up being a last minute things in most cases.
I run into this problem all the time. School things, homework with the kids, shuffling in and out, play dates, parties, you name it somehow somewhere in between all that I must make a healthy dinner for the family.

Planning ahead makes any busy day seem so much simpler. Taking the time to sit down to go through recipes and write down the ingredients I have plus need, and then setting the menu up is a lot of work. Some weeks I’ll admit I just don’t want to do it. It’s not hard, but it’s not easy either.
Which brings me to a wonderful giveaway offered to you all.

With each weekly plan you’ve got five meals that are easily “assembled” in an hour. She gives you the run down on how to keep it simple, and the food is healthy as well.
This is what the weekly shopping list for the menu looks like.

The menu includes a few meals that can be frozen if you don’t plan on cooking right away. You can make double or triple recipes and freeze some for later dates. Freezable meals should be done in freezer bags or containers and covered carefully. Label your meals even if not freezing with heating instructions to shave off a few extra steps on the day you plan on eating it.
It’s all very organized and easily read, helping busy families take back dinner in just ONE hour!
She's including a healthy range of meals, from beef, pork, chicken to seafood and including great ideas for the sides (which are including on the grocery list) along with her own tips to help you out even more!

Cheesy Goodness

As if I have to say it more, there's so many things you can do with cheese. With kids it seems the perfect way to solve the "I don't like this" is throw cheese on it. Any cheese really does the trick, a hot dog, chili (who doesn't eat chili with cheese? jeez!) Spaghetti, a sandwich, eggs, simple buttered bread, heck I throw extra cheese on a cheesy dish and they beam an incredible smile. Broccoli, asparagus, chicken, beef (yeah, don't  get me started) and the ever ending kinds of pasta. Really, my kids would eat anything with cheese on it.
Though I cater to my kids most the time, I really do like to enjoy a meal that isn't smiling up at me, or made into a fun shape. Sometimes I'd just like to enjoy a meal that isn't all about the kids. I'm so selfish that way!
In all seriousness though, I really do go out of my way to make sure the meals will be kid friendly, but at the same time it needs to adult friendly as well.
This recipe, is perfect for that. Coming from the "5 Ingredient Fix, Easy, Elegant, and Irresistible Recipes" cookbook by Claire Robinson. It's called Cheesy Penne. Now the day I was going to make this I didn't notice there wasn't any Penne in the cupboard, so I instead used some elbow pasta. It came out creamy, rich and silky. A wonderful, and very tasty dish that I can honestly say adults would love just as much as the kids.

Cheesy Penne

Ingredients:

salt for the pot
1 pound fresh or dried penne pasta
1/2 cup whole milk
2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
3/4 cup heavy cream
4 ounces aged English white Cheddar cheese, grated
Kosher salt and freshly cracked black pepper to taste

Directions. Bring a large saucepan of salt water to a boil over high heat. Add the pasta" cook until al dente, according to package instructions and drain. Return the pasta to the saucepan.

Whisk the milk with the Dijon mustard in a small bowl and add the pot with cooked pasta, along with the cream and grated Cheddar. Stir over med-low heat until the cheese melts and the mixture is nice and thick. Season with salt and pepper and serve immediately.

For the kids I tossed in some cooked ham, I enjoyed mine with a left over piece of chicken.

"Best Pals"

I remember tea sets being something I'd usually race to play with at either of my grandparents house. I wasn't much into dolls, but for some reason I loved playing with tea sets. One grandmother had a green glass set that my sister and I played with, while the other grandmother had a box full of these wonderful tin sets we'd play with. I don't know why, but we played with them underneath the dinning room table. It's funny now, I can imagine sitting there watching every ones feet go by while we played, even though it seems funny, there was many hours spent with those tea sets. I was lucky to get one place setting of the green tea set as well, but it was broken in a move a few years back. Memories though never die, I remember the hours of fun I had with my sister at both houses and miss it.
Even though I miss it, I get to enjoy watching my own girls play as well as enjoy the same memories I had as a child. I love being able to pass some things along to the kids, and I was happy to come across something that brought many wonderful memories back with a set of rag dolls and a tea set. Now is your chance to do the same with your children!

Kathy and Janet Lennon, of the Lennon Sisters have made the memory of their lifelong friendship and love of a handmade rag dolls into a wonderful product line called "Best Pals".

The wonderful dolls feel homemade, soft and identical to the set that were given to Kathy and Janet in 1949. The music CD is full of childhood favorites lullabies which have been greatly enjoyed by my girls. The classic tin tea set, make pretend play easy and no worries on them breaking. They bring back many memories for me, tin sets are not easy to find these days, neither are soft crafted rag dolls.
My two older girls, 5 and 3 have played with the tea set and rag dolls for hours it seems, enjoying themselves in their own little world of imagination and I couldn't have found any other perfect set for them. The Tin Tea set is a complete service for 4, including a sturdy carrying case to keep them all in one place.

There are 6 different styles of dolls, the originals being the Kathy and Janet Doll. Their hair can be re-styled, each doll aslo comes with a beaded "Best Pals" bracelet! On the website you can order different wardrobes for added play as well as some other CD's full of wonderful songs for your little ones to enjoy!

Stepping Stones Review

Reading has always been such a great passion of mine. So many stories, adventures, puzzles and mysterious with every turn of the page. As a mother of four now, I am just as excited as I was as a child to pick up a new book, not just for myself, but for my kids. Seeing the looks on my children's faces light up with books, is amazing. There's something about seeing them get those first words, finishing their first book and begging for another that will always stick with me.

Reading is meant to be fun, so why can't the learning be fun just as well? As parents we're always trying to think of ways to keep our kids going, keep challenging them and see them succeed.
Stepping Stones Together has made that even easier to reconnect that goal with parents and their children.
Stepping Stones Together is a very affordable reading program ($19.99 for the 60 day program but access for 90 days, full year is $39) for parents to get an active part in their children's reading skills. With vocabulary words, most used nouns as well as word frequency, this program gives both child and parent the tools to make a stronger reader.

I have two school aged children, the oldest is in 3rd grade but always needs the constant brush up on his words. My oldest daughter started K this year and is beaming from ear to ear when she grabs a book. Using Stepping Stones books she's been delighted to pick up word skills at her own pace as well as with her favorite subjects outside of school.
The program covers a wonderful range of text from superheroes, sports, transportation, animals, princesses, and fairies. The books can be read online or printed out and used as coloring pages as well.

I was really interested in printing out the flash cards that go along with the books. Kids do great with visual pictures,  which Stepping Stones does in simple pictures on the pages, but having flash cards gets them to focus better on the word alone.
The site also offers more than just the reading books that are appropriate for ages 3-7. I printed out a daily incentive chart to track the progress of my daughter, yet another visual aid that boosts their confidence as well as encourages them to keep going. Kids always enjoy seeing how far they've come. With the chart you can put down stickers or use a simple stamp , make it their own, hang it up to show it off and be proud!

There's also practice writing sheets, and games offered.

I would highly recommend Stepping Stones Together, for beginner readers, as well as even readers needing to keep up their vocabulary. The flash cards offer a wonderful way to get some spelling time done too. Though my son is past the offered reading level by Stepping Stones the flash cards have become not only spelling cards but definition cards for him.

It's rewarding to see my children accomplish goals, to see them gaining more skills as well as an understanding  for reading they will forever enjoy as an adult. I think in today's world while TVs and computers are taking over, we over look the adventures that sit right on our book shelves.
Check out Stepping Stones Together here

5 Ingredient Fix Part 1

I was lucky enough to be able to review the cookbook “5 Ingredient Fix: Easy Elegant, and Irresistible Recipes” By Claire Robinson, host of 5 Ingredient Fix on Food Network.

At first glance there were several things that had my attention. One, being the most obvious, these are not your everyday recipes. Most recipes in the book are five ingredients, while others have a couple more, but nothing major. All under ten , and all reasonable as well. These are as the cookbook says on the cover, Easy, Elegant, and irresistible, which I agree with most defiantly.
Normally when I’m looking at recipes, or a cookbook the time is a factor, but most of all the ingredients. Do I have them? Are they hard to find? Would this be something I can make with left over’s?
Usually if it’s listing ingredients I don’t normally keep in the house, I’ll set it aside and try it when I have the chance, it’s not something that makes the menu. Though I’d love to try every recipe that looks wonderful, my bank account says, be practical.

The cookbook 5 ingredient Fix, offers really easy recipes, with in most cases ingredients you would normally have around, so no shopping around for that one ingredient your missing. I’ve tried a couple recipes so far , Wild rice casserole, Cheesy Penne, Sautéed Wild Mushrooms as well as a Dry Rubbed BBQ Chicken, yummy!

I like how with each recipe on the side the cookbook offers some extra tips on how to make each recipe stand our, as well as some “what to toss in if you have it” options. I love cookbooks that give you some ideas other than a recipe.

This recipe is a wonderful addiction to steak, or you can even make it into a rich stroganoff style mushroom dish! Versatile, you have to love that!

Sautéed Wild Mushrooms

Ingredients

¼ cup olive oil plus more as needed
2 lbs mixed wild mushrooms sliced
3 sprigs fresh thyme
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
2 shallots, chopped
¼ cup water
2 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce.
Working in batches, pour 1 to 2 tablespoons olive oil in a large skillet over medium- high head. Add about a third of the mushrooms and a spring of thyme, depending on the skillet size, and cook. Stirring until golden brown and softened, about 10 minutes. Season the mushrooms with salt and pepper and transfer to a bowl. Cover to keep warm while you continue cooking the mushrooms with the thyme.
Once all the mushrooms are cooked, return them all to the skillet and add the shallots. Stir and continue cooking until the shallots are softened. About 5 minutes. Pour about ¼ cup water and the Worcestershire sauce into the skillet and scrape up any brown bits. Continue cooking until the liquid is absorbed . Taste and adjust the seasoning. Serve warm or at room temperature.

** To make this really decadent, add about ½ cup heavy cream at the end of cooking and simmer until very thick and creamy. Stir about 2 tablespoons of sour cream for a rich stroganoff-style mushroom side dish**

I served this along side some New York steaks that I got on sale. Ever since I’d gone to a restaurant a couple years ago for my birthday I’ve been in love with Sautéed Mushrooms. They really are delicious. If you haven’t ever tried them, you should try them out. This recipe is a new fun way to dress up the way I make mushrooms. Normally it’s just in garlic and butter, so this has become a new favorite around here. Two out of four of my kids enjoyed it as well!

This is a wonderful cookbook, lots of quick meal ideas, sides are great addictions to the table, desserts that make you mouth water, and tips on nearly every page to help spice up the recipe. You can buy the book 5 Ingredient Fix, Easy, Elegant and Irresistible Recipes By Claire Robinson at Amazon.com

Enjoy!
