BBQ Tofu Pizza

Yup, Tofu Pizza! Don't knock it till you try it, that's all I'm saying. Sure tofu gets a bad rep, but I think some of you would be surprised once you try it. The first time I tried tofu was a couple months ago when I made it with soup. I figured soup has other vegetables, broth, you'll get a little of everything so it won't just be a big chunk of tofu on a spoon! I was very surprised that I liked it and moved on to more adventures recipes. The Tofu Burger, won my kids over and I can even make a similar version of that for taco's that they truly enjoy. I've baked tofu, and even put it in quiche, which didn't work out so well after all but the point is, you can do a lot of things with tofu. I didn't have a recipe to go by with this,  just pretty much threw it together

BBQ Tofu Pizza

BBQ sauce
Firm Tofu
Pizza dough
Mozzarella cheese
other toppings you'd like I used some onions

Crumbled up the tofu and toss it into skillet with a couple tablespoons BBQ sauce.  Cook the tofu in a skillet with the BBQ sauce for about 5 minutes. Spread some more BBQ sauce on your prepared pizza crust (either pre cooked or not up to you) Spread the tofu over the sauce and top with cheese. Sprinkle your other toppings on top. Bake as your pizza crust directs you to.

I dare you to try tofu, or at the very least try something new. What's the worst that will happen? You won't like it? You won't ever know until you at least try :)   Enjoy!

Garden Update- Hidden Surprises

I totally forgot to post about what I found in the garden this while weeding through the flowers this weekend. I was so busy posting the wild flower pictures that these were skipped right over. Even though I've had a rocky start to the summer vegetable garden it's on it's way now. My seedlings are in the process of being transplanted into bigger containers. They aren't big enough to be left outside just yet but in a couple week they will be.

In between the rocks and sticky bushes I found some tomato plants. These can be, Roma, Cherry, or Sweet 100's as those are the three plants that were in the area last year and year before. I'm telling you I keep finding these each year!

These are Cherry Tomatoes without a doubt as if you look around the roots, that's the tomato skin.  I found another interesting find with complete squash shell intact a few weeks ago. take a look here, it's pretty neat!

The best thing about this, besides the fact that they are free, and I didn't have to tend to them at all yet is, they are already hardy enough to stay outside. Tomato plants are recommended to be started inside well before the last frost date, then slowly brought outside to get used to the weather before you fully transplant them. In this case they started on their own so I'll just end up digging them up carefully and separating them like I have in the past. They will most likely produce first even though my seedlings inside are taller. I've noticed that over the years since this started happening, the more hardy the plant started out to be the better and quicker it produces.

I cannot wait for my tomatoes this year! If you missed my wild flower post, it's over here and I have about 100 seeds of them if anyone would like them :)

Sylvania Automotive Lighting- Father's Day Giveaway *CLOSED**

Did you know that headlights can dim up to 20% in 2 years, which can affect driving visibility? It's recommended to check your headlights at least once a year to make sure they are working at their highest performance. Sylvania has a few great tips you should keep in mind-
  • Checking your headlights- Park on a level surface facing five feet from a building wall or your garage door, then turn on your headlights. If the circles of light are bright and white, they are in good working condition. If they are yellow or dim, the bulbs should be replaced.
  • Always change headlight bulbs in pairs. Because bulbs dim over time, the new one will likely be brighter than the old one, causing an uneven field of illumination.
  • If the lenses on a vehicle’s headlights are cloudy or hazy, replacing the bulbs may not be enough. Consider a headlight restoration kit, which restores headlights to like-new condition and light output. The Sylvania kit includes a UV Block Clear Coat that protects headlights from UV rays – the number one reason headlights become dangerous. After use, drivers should see a considerable improvement, as the product enables up to three times more light to shine on the road.
We checked out headlights out on our Van when we got the SYLVANIA SilverStar® ULTRA and SYLVANIA SilverStar® zXe headlight bulbs. They were changed just a year ago, so we didn't think they needed replacing at all. Think again!  I couldn't believe the difference, really, what a huge difference. The headlights we replaced on our other car were even worse.

A little about the two Headlight bulbs we reviewed,

SYLVANIA SilverStar® ULTRA headlight bulbs provide up to 40 percent increased down road visibility, up to 50 percent increased side road visibility and up to 50 percent brighter light compared to worn standard halogen headlights. For some drivers, that will be about half the length of a football field.

SYLVANIA SilverStar® zXe headlight bulbs feature a unique blend of xenon and halogen gases, and are the newest and whitest color temperature product in the SYLVANIA SilverStar® High Performance Series of headlights. These bulbs give vehicles the look and feel of HID (high-intensity discharge) lights.

We have gone through all three of our cars and replaced the bulbs, I don't think we'll be switching anytime soon from using Sylvania. My husband was taken back at the difference and he knows his cars so for him to say these are much safer and more reliable says a lot. Be sure to Check out Sylvania to view the other automotive lighting products they offer. Make sure you replace your headlights on time, or at least test them to see if they are in good working condition!

Would you like a chance to win one of the SYLVANIA SilverStar® ULTRA or SYLVANIA SilverStar® zXe headlight bulbs? Now's your chance please enter the Rafflecopter giveaway below. Open to US only.

Wild Flowers Galore

While the summer vegetable garden is perking up a bit the flowers are just booming around the garden.  I did a bunch of pruning back and clearing out areas to plant more flowers. Though I've never had trouble with pollinators in the garden just the idea of not having them around when the vegetable garden needs it the most makes me plan to lure them in even more, thus planting more flowers. The best way to lure pollinators into the garden to help pollinate a vegetable or even herb garden is to have small patches of flowers throughout your garden. More or less you want the flowers on both ends of your garden and your middle if not more throughout. You get the best coverage that way. These are a few throughout my garden so far.

California Poppies!

These aren't wild flowers but they are Mustard Greens about to go to seed! I have as you can see tons :)

It's very colorful around here that's for sure! I do have a collection of the seeds if anyone would like about 100 or so. It's all mixed, just email me  mburbage@sbcglobal.net

The SureFlap Microchip Cat Door - Review & Discount

I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Mom Blog Society Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

We recently were able to review a SureFlap Microchip Cat Door, which can also work on small dogs (think the size of a cat, about 7lbs)

The SureFlap Microchip Cat Door identifies cats using their unique identification microchip, unlocking only for your pet and preventing strays and neighborhood cats from entering your home. It can also save you the trouble to have to open and shut the door whenever your small dog or cat needs to go out. I am in the process of convincing my mother in law she will find this useful. She takes tumbles easily so this could help her out extremely without her having to bother about getting up and down all the time. Since this works with the Microchip your pet already has there's no extra chip to buy in order for this to work. I like the seal on the unit which is very easy to install, much better than our pet door right now which ends up letting air in. This keeps tightly closed but opens easily and your pet won't have any trouble getting in or out once they figure out how to use it.

Some Facts about the SureFlap Microchip Cat Door-

  • Learns your cat's existing identification microchip
  • Compatible with all common microchip types*
  • No need for a collar or tag which can become lost or snagged
  • Simple one-button programming learns your cat's chip number in seconds
  • Quick and easy to install into doors, windows and walls
  • Fits into the hole left by most existing cat flaps
  • Battery operated - typical battery life up to 12 months
  • Stores up to 32 cats in memory

Here is a quick video

Anyone with small dogs or cats that love going outside can now have the freedom of doing so throughout the day while you are not there and without you worrying about strays waltzing in at the same time.

If you yourself are after one head over to SureFlap.com  and enter the code MOMBLOG12 at checkout on you’ll be eligible for a 10% discount between now and May 31!!! SureFlap retails for $149.99

Unstuffed Cabbage

If you missed my Review on The Whole Foods Kosher Kitchen , Glorious Meals Pure & Simple by Lévana Kirschenbaum, you can head over here and read it. I am revisited the cookbook because there's just so many wonderful recipes in it and know many of you are already thinking about picking this up.

This Unstuffed Cabbage recipe is fun, because as Lévana states in the book her "Stuffed Cabbage" had come completely undone in the pot as it cooked. She was mortified at the mess but the meal was delicious despite of it. We love Stuffed Cabbage in this house and this seemed like a perfect recipe to try out. With the taste of the apples as well as cranberry juice in it, it brought a whole new change to what I normally cook. I truly brought out flavors.  Don't think I'll go back to cooking stuffed cabbage without added apples in it either. My kids also adored this recipe, they all thought it was sloppy joe's because that's pretty much how it looks. I served it with homemade bread and they all gave it the thumbs up!

Unstuffed Cabbage

1/4 cup olive oil
1 large onion, quartered
4 ribs of celery, peeled
2 Granny Smith apples, unpeeled and quartered
1 large bunch of dill, fronds and stems
3 pounds lean ground beef or turkey
1 large head of white cabbage, center cores discarded. Sliced very thin
1 cup golden or black raisins
2 cups short grain brown rice
6 cups canned crushed tomatoes
6 cups cranberry or pomegranate juice
1/4 cup tomato paste
2 tablespoons cinnamon
2 tablespoons paprika
4-5 bay leaves or 1 teaspoon ground
Salt, just a drop if at all, and pepper to your liking.

Heat the oil in a wide bottom pot. In a food processor coarsely grind the onions, celery, apples and dill. Add the ground mixture to the pot and saute until translucent. Add the meat and saute a few more minutes. Add all remaining ingredients and bring to a boil. Reduce to medium low and cook covered for about 1 1/2 hours, stirring occasionally to avoid scorching. Cook until the cabbage and the rice are very tender and the liquid is nice and thick. Serve hot.

You don't want to miss out on this Cookbook, I am finding myself using it more than any other cookbook in my house right now. It's got wonderful suggestions for alternate ingredients, several variations to change things up. Just a great cookbook all around. Check out Levana Cooks website where you can pick up your own copy of The Whole Foods Kosher Kitchen: Glorious Meals Pure & Simple

Sweeney's New, Easy-to-Set Deadset Mole Trap- Review & Giveaway **CLOSED**

There's a lot of critters I dislike, and there's plenty of them I get along with, moles are not one of them. My dogs normally take care of our critter problem but mole's tend to be those pesky things that literally pop up and disappear leaving destruction in their path. Mole's can be very destructive to lawns and gardens, they also don't just go away like other critter's tend too.
We recently had a chance to review the Sweeney's New East to Set Deadset Mole trap. The new trap is extremely easy-to-set thanks to an ergonomically designed, easy-to-grasp handle and a patented triggering system. Precision built, the Deadset trap is triggered by the slightest underground movement, effectively driving the spears into the ground and killing the mole.

My husband has used these traps before, he knew right away how to set them and took me on a lesson! Before setting the Deadset Mole Trap, it's recommended to water down the lawn to bring the moles food source (earthworms and bugs) up close to the surface where the trap will be placed.  The next step is to locate active tunnels. “Flatten tunnels by walking on them and then wait a day,If the tunnel rises up, it’s active. This is where the trap should be placed.”  -Stew Clark, Sweeney’s Director of Research
When setting a mole trap it is important to make sure the spears can move freely through the ground when the trap is triggered.  You can test the Deadset Mole Trap by pulling up on the handle to set the trap and then pushing down on the trap release lever located on the side of the trap. This will drive the spears into the ground.  Raise and lower the trap until the spears are unobstructed by roots or rocks.  Always use the release lever to trip the trap before moving it to another location.  Of course don't be setting these out around where the kids are playing.

The Deadset Mole Trap is sold at leading retailers nationwide and on the company’s website at www.wrsweeney.com. For more information, visit the company’s Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/SweeneysDIYPestControl, call 1-800-837-7644

They really work well, so if you have pesky moles tearing up your lawn and even garden I'd recommend the Sweeney's New, Easy-to-Set Deadset Mole Trap!  Want to Win one? Today is your lucky day! One of my wonderful readers has the chance to win a Sweeney's East to set Deadset Mole Trap! Enter below, sorry this is only open to US only~

The Whole Foods Kosher Kitchen Cookbook- Review & Recipe

The Whole Foods Kosher Kitchen , Glorious Meals Pure & Simple by Lévana Kirschenbaum is simply this- Awesome.

I have been through this cookbook from to cover and cannot find anything I don't like about it. I'll give you a run down on the book -

First impression flipping through this cookbook I was almost overwhelmed by some recipes and their ingredients list. Don't let this fool you though and don't skip this because of that you'd end up missing the amazing things throughout this book. Once I sat down to really read through it I was really happy with it.  Nearly every recipe comes with variations. There's lists of substitutions for ingredients, if you don't have them on hand or simply happen to just feel wild and want to switch things up. I absolutely love that this cookbook includes the variations. One recipe may have up to ten (or more!) suggestions on how to cook it. Even the bread section has variations, and you all know how much I love bread!

The author, Lévana Kirschenbaum, has put together a wonderful book full of simple, healthy and delicious recipes.

In addition to her native Moroccan cuisine, Lévana recipes include Indian, Italian, French and Chinese cuisine. The book includes three comprehensive indexes:
• A General Index, with more than 350 recipes
• A Gluten-free index, with natural and delicious gluten-free adaptations of more than 250 dishes
• A Passover index, with more than 250 Passover-friendly recipes

There's something for everyone in here, from snacks, drinks, desserts, soups simple salads and more. The pictures are beautiful and the recipes are simple very well written and leave you mouth watering.

I have made a couple things form the cookbook one of them including -

Arborio Risotto with Spinach and Asparagus. It was amazing. I loved the tastes, and of course it has an entire page following it with different variations on how to cook this one recipe.

1 tablespoon olive oil
6 cups baby spinach
1 dozen thin asparagus, tough ends discarded. Cut into sections.
1 cup frozen or fresh green peas

1/4 cup olive oil
1 large onion chopped up
4 medium shallots chopped
2 cups arborio rice
Pinch of saffron
2 cups champagne , dry wine or sake (inexpensive champagne) I used white wine
4 cups hot water
Salt and pepper to taste
1/4 cup chopped parsley

Directions -
Heat oil in a wide heavy skillet. Ad the spinach, asparagus and peas sauteing just a minute or two until the leaves are wilted. Reserve.
In the same skillet heat the oil and add the onion and shallots. saute until translucent. Add the arborio and saute about 2 more minutes. Reduce the temperature to medium adding saffron, wine and stir just until most the liquid is absorbed. Add hot water one cup at a time, adding in the next cup only when the first one has been absorbed. Total rice cooking time should be about 20 minutes. When rice is tender stir in the reserved vegetable mixture along with salt pepper and parsley. Heat through 2-3 minutes. The mixture will be cream. Serve hot.

The variations are simple, change up the greens, or add different kinds in there. Keep it a vegetable dish or add in some smoked turkey even diced chicken. It was my first Risotto and the directions were easy to follow to bring out a wonderful dish.

You do not want to miss this cookbook! There's even menu plan suggestions, easy to follow directions and never ending ideas flowing through this book. Check out Levana Cooks website where you can pick up your own copy of The Whole Foods Kosher Kitchen: Glorious Meals Pure & Simple   ,

DuneCraft Seed Bombs - Review

Think you can't grow anything? Think you need special soil or even expensive materials to get something to grow? Think again!
DuneCraft has come up with a  fun, and interesting way to kick start some plants right in your own yard by simply dropping a bomb! A Seed Bomb that is!

Seed bombs are seeds encased in a clay and peat mixture that protects seedlings from animals insects even too much moisture while they are beginning to sprout.

We reviewed the Native Perennial Mix. Each box contains 6 Seed Bombs to use. I tossed two in the yard marking it so I'd know where to look. The box says they will sprout within 5 days of tossing or placing them down against the ground. Ours took just a little longer most likely due to the heavy frost we had and stormy weather. Once the weather cleared up those the seed bombs finally sprouted!

It will be weeks till we see flowers but the seedlings are very sturdy already, and they are growing fast. At only $4.99 this would be a great gift for any one who thinks they can't grow a darn thing. Kids would love these as it's very easy to plant their own wild flower garden. You can pick from Butterfly & Bird mixture, to Grass, even an Herb collection along with the Native Perennial Mix. You can also buy these four varieties in larger quantities in DuneCrafts Buckets size, which are $19.99 and they hold 20 Seed Bombs. Just go on outside and start tossing the Seeds bombs all over the place!

Check out DuneCraft and their Seed Bombs  along with their other wonderful green sprouting products. These would make a fantastic gift for Mother's day, or even Father's day. Such a great site full of science and nature projects that could get the entire family in on some fun.

I'll update in when the plants blossom! My kids are very excited to watch them grow! So stay tuned :)
