DIY Yoga Mat Cleaner with Essential Oils

Yoga has been a major part of my day since I broke my hip over a year ago. It’s gotten me back on my feet  through a very long, difficult recovery.

Rarely missing a day I focus on deepening my practice because it has become such a great way to find myself and grow, and while I practice almost twice a day there’s one thing sometimes I tend to forget- cleaning my mat. Seems rather simple right?

What happens is, I’m working hard, sweating away, then what? Roll it up and pack it away then go clean up. I’ll admit I forget to clean it, why I am really not sure, it’s simple, quick – a no fuss deal yet – oops. So here we are, a DIY mat cleaner I’ve come to enjoy using after the end of my practice.

I have two cleaning sprays I like but tend to use the one with Peppermint more than the one with Tea Tree oil. Using essential oils is cheaper than any other cleaner you buy whether at a yoga studio or the store, plus it’s safe for you as well as the air around you. The oils disinfect the mat, and leave a wonderful soft scent behind the next time you unroll and get down to your workout.

#1 DIY Mat Cleaner

1 C Water
1/4 C Witch Hazel
 10 drops Tea Tree
Oil 15 drops Lavender Essential Oil
5 drops Eucalyptus Essential Oil

Directions

Put everything in a spray bottle and stake. Spray on the mat and wipe.

#2 DIY Mat Cleaner

2 cups water
5oz witch hazel ( 1/2 cup plus 2 Tablespoons)
10 drops peppermint essential oil
6 drops lavender essential oil
6 drops eucalyptus essential oil

Directions: Put everything in a spray bottle. Shake, spray on the yoga mat, and wipe.

Do you remember to clean any of your workout accessories? If so, what do you use?

This sounds like the perfect cleaner. I imagine the Lavender helps relax you and calm you as you practice the art later on.

I just went to my first yoga class today, I used their mats and this would have been great to have. If I continue to go, I will definitely get my own and use these.

Love this idea! I haven't been good about cleaning my yoga mat and don't realize it until I'm in a pose laying on it and smell it. It would be so much nicer to smell some fresh essential oils!

My mother and grandmother swore by Witch Hazel. I don't know why I've never tried it myself, but I might. 🙂

My mat could use a good cleaning. I always just wiped down with bleach. This sounds better. Thanks!

I make my own yoga mat cleaner too. I did have 3 yoga mats, but 2 of my Granddaughters are taking Pilate Classes in College. The college lets them use these really thin mats, but they were so thin that you might as well of been lying on concrete. …. so, I gave them each one of my 3. Now I am down to one.

I've been wanting to get a yoga mat, thanks. I can't do the eucalyptus oil, but I love the others you suggested.

I love the photo. It is a great promotion for yoga. I don't do yoga or have a mat but if I did, I would be cleaning it regularly. I am just that kind of person. 😉

I have one that has a cloth top, it is nice because you do not slip but I have no idea what to do to clean it. I have been using my other one that is more of a rubberized texture so this cleaner will be perfect.

I need a real yoga mat I just have the one that came with my wii. lol I don't clean it. I usually just take a paper towel and wipe it down. I bet your way makes it smell better and I bet you want to use it more as it's not collecting dust like my wii mat since I been sick I simply don'yt work out or do any yoga like I used to. I am waiting fo surgery.

  • Masshole Mommy

Oh my yoga mat could totally use a good cleaning, too. I kind of just thought I would throw it away one of these days and get a new one lol.
