My Friend Cayla is no ordinary doll , sure you’ve seen and heard of interactive dolls, some that make noises, laugh , sneeze, you know the drill- Cayla she’s a little more special as she responds back to you.

My Friend Cayla

Meet My Friend Cayla, Winner of Innovator Toy of the Year 2015 award

My Friend Cayla is about 18 inches tall, nearly ready to use right out of the box. Connecting by internet through Bluetooth using an iOS or Android device app she uses voice recognition to respond to what ever is being said. Interaction can be through questions, stories, even games and responds when your child flips through her photo album.

Straight out of the box, she requires 3 AA batteries. Once they are in you just download the app ” My Friend Cayla” ,  turn the doll on, and then follow quick simple directions to connect the app. It was extremely easy to do, my 9 year old daughter set it up in just minutes before Cayla was already started to greet my daughters.

She greets your child, asks how their day was and asks if they’ve been up to anything before telling them how her day was. At first my daughters kept talking all at once, so she wasn’t responding back correctly. Once they waited their turn and for the necklace light to brighten interactions were much easier. She loves to speak! My daughters love to chit chat. It was a fun toy for them.

She loves asking Cayla about the weather!

What questions can you ask Cayla? Apparently a lot! We asked simple ones, favorite colors, animals, subject, book. She will be very descriptive when answering so it’s not just ” Pink.”  It’s Pink is my favorite color, it would be really fun if there was a way to make everything pink and more. I liked that, it was more engaging to the kids than I thought it would be. She doesn’t always answer questions, my kids threw tough ones at her and she’ll simply say ” Sorry I don’t know that one, try another.”  Since she’s connected to the internet she can search for answer on the internet to answer back, and she’s censored so fear not on the bad words, she’s not going to say them!

The Photo Album is really fun, you click through and pick which picture to look at. Once one is picked, Cayla will start telling you what it is, where the picture was taken and interesting things about it or the day/trip. You can’t interact  with her while she’s doing this, or the stories either, it’s just feeding you information. My kids didn’t mind this, they were enjoying the mini stories for the pictures. The same goes for the stories, which you can choose from and she reads to your child. They can read right along with her and flip through the stories as she goes. Cayla also plays games, interacting through each, talking to whoever’s playing with her.

My girls have had a lot of fun with their new friend Cayla, they are enjoying asking more questions and having her read to them. I do wish she had more stories than just three main stories to read along, but  Cayla does chatter through questions and pictures so she shares plenty else. The only drawback I found was Cayla, while running, takes over my phone. If I had an iPad, or it I could run the app on another device I wouldn’t have to give up the phone completely. All in all My Friend Cayla was a complete surprise, my girls love her, she’s extremely easy to set up, no hassle what so ever.  She fits most 18in. doll clothes, so the fun keeps going  even when she’s not on she still gets a ton of playtime in, we’re all  curious to see what she will say next!

I think this would have been fun to have had – especially to play with other friends with the doll – great lesson to learn how to wait and not interrupt, also!

I’ll be honest…these kinds of dolls freak me out…I watched too many scary movies as a kid and now I think they’re all going to move in their sleep and try to eat me! Awful right?

OH MY GOODNESS. My 7 and 4 year old would kill for this doll. Just one question, what do I do, in the night, when it starts speaking to me while hovering over my awakened head?

    • Melanie

lol ! It won’t happen! Promise. The doll doesn’t work when the app is closed, even if the doll button is ” on” . So no mysterious talking of chatting middle of the night 😉

  • Lois Jones

  • Linda Kinsman

Sadly, my youngest girl has phased out of playing with dolls. I treasure the memories made though when we would play for hours with her merry band of dolls and stuffed animals. This looks like a fun doll for your daughter.

  • Robin Masshole mommy

All how sweet batteries. I have some young nieces that would absolutely love that.

  • dana

Aw the age of electronics, smart phones and Smart Dolls. Love it. I wish this was around before. The girls look like they had fun, I wish my daughter were a tad younger because I would love her to have had this!

  • becca

Aw what a cute doll. I never played with them growing up but thought they were pretty cool.

  • tara pittman

I love dolls but one that requires a phone to play with it seems weird. Kids need time away from electronics.

    • Melanie

Actually the the talking is a plus, my girls would play with her even if she didn’t speak , or didn’t hook up to the phone. She’s nicely built, she fits most standard doll clothes so she gets tons of play time when it’s time to turn electronics off in the house.
