DIY Carpet Freshener

It’s no secret that a lot of the cleaners in the store these days are filled with more chemicals than we can name let alone pronounce. Makes a person wonder what damage they are doing not just to their home but to themselves. There’s a bunch of warnings on the very product you are supposed to clean your home with and then up lingering around in the air for all to breathe.
While yes, those harsh chemicals do indeed clean- it’s not very healthy. Many people have started saying “No” to the commercial cleaners and have started looking elsewhere to get the jobs done. While I aim to buy true and organic products, it’s actaully a lot easier to make your own, plus it’s cheaper! As a single Mom of four, you can’t beat something that is easy on the budget and gets the job done . Over the last few years I’ve tried many recipes and now I will be sharing with you all my favorites ones that I’ve come across.

Today is all about a smelly teenage boys room. Says a lot right there doesn’t it? I don’t have to point out how many different smells could be lingering in there let along lurking in corners- fact is- It smells like a boys room!
The biggest issue is actaully the carpet. Smells love to stick to carpets, we’ve all been there. We have tried carpet fresheners but it doesn’t last long at all, and ends up costing a bundle just to keep it smelling even semi fresh. This DIY Carpet Freshener is easy to make and leaves the room smelling super fresh longer than most fresheners.
What you need
- Glass Jar with top ( you could use a old Parmesan lid on a mason jar)
- 2 1/2 cups Baking Soda
- 10-15 drops Lavender Essential Oil
- 10-15 drops Orange Essential Oil ( I used Wild Orange)
Combine all the ingredients and shake it up. To use, just sprinkle the mixture on the carpet and let it sit for about an hour before vacuuming up. Go over the areas twice just to make sure you get all the powder up.
I used Lavender and Wild Orange that’s long lasting and brings a nice cleansing scent to the room. You can use different oils, what ever you like. I find Orange, Lemon and Lavender the top scents to use for cleaning. Never over powering and always brighten a room up. Lavender is calming and relaxing, while orange or any citrus scents refreshes and awakens. Both oils naturally deodorize so they are great to clean with and added with the baking soda, which soaks up smells itself, leaves the room fresh!

I love using baking soda and essential oils for the one rug we have in our house. It really does do wonders to remove any smells. I love to use Lavender and Peppermint.

I have always known that baking soda is great for eliminating odors, but I didn’t know you can add essential oils to it. This is an awesome idea and I love your choice of scents. I’d go for lavender first too!
