DIY Essential Oil Candles
My family loves arts & crafts! Since the kids were very young they have always enjoyed doing crafts of all kinds. Now as they are older we do if it even possible, more then before! I’ve got large plastic storage tubs filled to the brim of all their younger stuff in the garage ( what couldn’t be fit in the house anyways) and my art room is glittered on each side of their art. It’s always a joy to glance around and see something they made years ago, or recently and remember the story behind it. Even better when the craft is able to be used. My daughter and I enjoy making lip balm and candles, even soap! Each time I light the candle or wash my hands it makes me smile at the good memories we’ve had making it all.
This summer has been packed full of many crafts, but our most recent were Essential Oil Candles. My eldest daughter and I love making candles, have for years and while she’s had kits before that came with scents ( we finally ran out!) this past birthday she was gifted a large amount of jars, and natural soy wax included with 100 wicks. With my supply of doterra essential oils we were set to go! ( you can check out my doterra shop and grab the oils listed below)
Essential Oil Candles
Colorant ( we used a mica powder)
Scents ( we used Doterra Oils, Balance, Lavender, Citrus Bloom, Lime , Myrrh & Roman Chamomile.) You can pick any scents you’d like, and even mix them up. It’s all about personal preference and having fun making new blends.
Directions
We used 2lbs + 2 cups of un-melted wax for 5, 6oz jars and 1 8oz jar. ( We love being abnormal! )
Wax must be melted in a melting pitcher or double broiler, never use anything that will come in contact with food. We use a wax melting pitcher in a large pot filled with water. While the wax is melting you need to prepare the jars with the wicks. We use a metal centering device and a dab of safe glue at the bottom to keep it in place.
Once the wax is melted we poured 3/4 cups melted wax into a measuring cup to add colorant ( follow directions for the colorant you use) and then add in your scent . If using essential oil ( we used about 25-30 drops of selected oil per jar) wait until you have stirred in the colorant and give it a full 2 minutes to cool down before adding in essential oil. If added too soon the oils can evaporate and you can’t smell them as much.
3/4 cups of melted wax will fill a 6 ounce jar. Let sit until completely cooled. Cover and store. Don’t burn the candles right away wait a good day or two.
The finished Product!
The first candle is used with Balance, a nice grounding scent good for meditation. Lavender is next which is calming and relaxing. Lime, we tried to match with a green colorant but it turned out to be a beautiful sea green and we aren’t complaining! Lime is a fun citrus smell, good for any day! The two white candles were Roman Chamomile and Myrrh mixed together.
The citrus bloom, while I LOVE this scent it was a limited one from doterra. Thankfully they list the oils in which make the scent up so it’s possible to recreate it closely.
Hope you enjoy making candles!
