DIY Stain & Odor Remover for Carpets

Puke, ‘Nuff said. The number of times I had to clean a mess up out of a carpet is beyond countable at this point. Four kids brings tons of messes but also an array of cleaners. If you’ve been following my new DIY cleaner series, you know that I’ve been trying for years to get rid of chemicals in the house and it’s been very rewarding. Nearly everything that I used to buy- I can make in my own home for a fraction of the price and it’s all natural.

One of the biggest things I struggle with is actaully keeping the car smelling nice. My kids after a period of time in the car- puke their guts out. They all get car sick at one point in time , or if I’m being challenged enough – all at the same time. Game on! Though it’s gotten much better over the years the car used to have the nickname ” Puke-mobile” Need I say more?

Let’s just say it leaves a very heavy lingering smell even after I’ve used cleaners . While most cleaners have made a good dent in the cleaning, it has never gotten the smell out. I find it almost hard to believe at times, but it’s true. I’ve begun to attack the problem with a variety of homemade recipes, some that seemed to work and others not so much. This DIY Stain and Odor Remover for carpets doesn’t just cover up any smell at all- it gets rid of the smell, it also cleans stains, so mega win here! I use it on the carpets and in the car, always test on a small area before you go any further!

This is really great for pets stains as well. The quicker you treat any stain the better , the longer it sets in the more you work for it. Always blot up moisture as much as you can before treating , and always test in a small area first. The oils are safe around pets and children, but I would not let them near the area until it’s drying. *Lavender can be irritating to sensitive skin if not diluted. This mixture should not cause problems as it’s heavily diluted  , if irritation does occur, use a carrier oil (coconut oil, grapeseed, even Olive oil)  to rub skin to calm, then wash with soap.

Ingredients DIY Stain & Odor Remover for Carpets

1 Cup White Vinegar
1 Cup Distilled Water
1/4 baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
10 Drops Lemon Essential Oil ( has antibacterial, antiviral, antimicrobial, anti-infection, astringent, detoxifying, antiseptic, disinfectant, anti-fungal properties.)
10 Drops Purify Essential Oil Blend ( light herbal scent that helps cleanse the air, and deoterize )
10 Drops Lavender Essential Oil

Mix together in a glass bottle with spray . Shake before each use.

How to Use-

Try soaking up most the mess as possible.

Soak up as much of the mess as possible before using. Spray the area depending on the heaviness of the stain, and let it sit for a good 15 minutes. Blot up as much as you can then let it dry.

**With really tough stains I’ve added 1/4 cup washing soda to the mix, spraying a bit more and scrubbing with a damp towel before spraying again then letting it sit for 15 minutes. Blot dry as best you can then let it completely dry on it’s own. (test a small area first)

I have a few friends who are really into using essential oils – I need to get more comfortable using them. I didn’t realize you could use them as stain and odor removers.

That is awesome. Especially if you have pets. The odor tends to linger in the carpet more. This diy would be a lifesaver.

Oh cool! This solution would probably last us a long time. We do have pets that make mistakes from time to time.

Wow what a cool idea. I may have to try this. I hate using toxic remover products!
