Laundry Soap Project- Meet Renee

I should forewarn all of you, I am awful at writing! I am really excited to be helping Melanie out with her blog. Much like Angie, I was extremely cautious about homemade soap….after all for the price store bought stuff costs, it HAS to be the best, right? WRONG. I used to use whatever was on sale–Purex, Tide, Dynamo, you name it, I’ve used it. We are trying to stay on a budget for groceries, and laundry soap falls into that category–so I usually purchased what I could afford. With two accident-prone, wild children and a husband who thinks his shirts are substitute napkins, I am constantly fighting with my laundry! The recipe I used came from my friend Mellissa, but it is the same recipe Angie used.

Laundry Soap:
12 cups Borax
8 cups Arm and Hammer Washing Soda
8 cups Baking Soda (I used generic)
8 cups grated bar soap

Mix all together well and use 2 tbsp per load!

Such a simple recipe! I doubled mine, purely just because I could:) I used less than 1 big box of Borax, 2 boxes of Arm and Hammer, 2 boxes of Baking Soda, and grated 8 bars of Ivory soap. I choose Ivory for the scent. The recipe as I made it ended up costing around $20 for everything. This soap is FANTASTIC. It received its first test the night after I made it. My two year old woke up and threw up red Kool-Aid and macaroni and cheese ALL over his white bedding, his light blue blanket, and his stuffed animals. This soap made everything fresh and brightly white. I was amazed! I did not have to use stain treatment or anything. I will NEVER go back to store bought detergent. Frankly, I have three bottles of detergent sitting in my basement collecting dust because I will not use them anymore! This was an extremely easy recipe to make, aside from standing in my kitchen for 30 minutes grating bar soap! It will definitely save us money in the long run, and I am really glad I gave it a shot.
