Sweet Treat Friday- Dutch Apple Pie

My kids think it’s pretty funny how I make a pie just for the purpose of being able to cut it while it’s still warm. I love Apple pie, it’s my all time favorite, but in the last few years I’ve realized I do not enjoy the top crust at all.
I’m more of the cut to the middle of everything and eat from inside out. This includes, cake, I will not have a corner piece or eat the edges (unless it’s Angel Food Cake ) Brownies, I like them perfectly soft and fudgy , no crust! Pizza, yeah I make square pizza just to eat the inside slices of the pizza and let he kids have the outside. Roast beef? Forget it, don’t ask me to eat an end piece, I want the dead center piece where it’s perfectly moist and oh so yummy!

Yes, this may seem strange, but that’s how I am which brings me back to the pie. Dutch Apple pie has no top crust. Instead of cutting into the crust you get mounds of warm brown sugar cinnamon apples and the buttery flaky crust underneath that soaked up all the good juices. Right to the good stuff, and no one touches my Dutch Apple Pie. I will admit I hide it, eat it, and attempt to wonder where it went when someones asks for it. Pie, what pie? I didn’t see any pie!

I don’t use a recipe for Dutch Apple pie, dont’ think I ever really have either, just made it the way I wanted it, but really all it is, is an apple pie with brown sugar ontop. Pretty simple!
Looked in my cookbooks to find one for Dutch Apple pie, but it’s  listed as “Apple Crumb Pie”  in the Better Homes and Garden Cookbook. I use way more apples, and more cinnamon as well but it comes down to pretty much the same thing.

Ingredients,
Your favorite Single Pie Crust recipe
Apples 6 cups   cut up and sliced
 1/2 teaspoon Cinnamon
3/4 cup Sugar
2 tablespoons Flour
1/8 teaspoon Nutmeg
1 tablespoon Lemon juice (I use about 2)

Crumb topping ingredients
1/2 cup Brown sugar
1/2 cup flour (half the time I don’t use the flour)
3 -4 tablespoons butter

Cut up apples into a large bowl.  Sprinkle with lemon juice,  flour, sugar , cinnamon and nutmeg. Mix it all up, poor it into the pie crust. I like piling mine in, and use way more apples than called for. I literally load them in there till it’s piled high, told you it was my favorite!

Take the butter, brown sugar and flour into a small bowl to mix up till it’s gets crumbly.  Sprinkle it over the apples and bake till bubbly. Bake for about 35-45 minutes at 375. I actually cook mine at 350 for 35 minutes until the top apples have gotten a nice golden look about them. 🙂

Enjoy some pie!
