French Bread Pizza

Oh how we all love our pizza! It’s fun to make and always fun to eat! Whatever toppings you decide on, it’s going to be a winner! This past week I made French Bread Pizza! My very first actaully ( hard to believe!) While I have made French Bread before it’s been several years that it’s graced our table. It was on a whim to make the French Bread Pizza, as I wanted pizza but didn’t really want to make so much dough and then roll each one out , it becomes a process. A fun process but there are times where it’s just too much. (Check out my recipe for homemade garlic bread using this recipe for French Bread!)

This recipe is really easy, don’t get intimidated by what the recipe looks like, the most time you’ll spend on it is mixing!

Ingredients
  1. 2 tablespoons rapid rise yeast ( bread machine yeast)
  2. 1/2 cup warm water
  3. 2 cups hot water
  4. 3 tablespoons sugar
  5. 1 tablespoon kosher salt
  6. 5 tablespoons vegetable oil
  7. 6 cups all purpose flour
Instructions
  1. Pre-Heat Oven to 375
  2. Dissolve yeast in 1/2 warm water, let it sit until it's foamy. In a large standing mixer bowl combine the hot water, salt, oil and 3 cups of the flour. Add in the yeast mixture to flour mix. Mix and add in 1 cup at a time the remaining flour until well combined. You should have a good soft/firm dough that isn't sticky to the touch. If it's still way too sticky mix in half a cup of flour or more until the dough is ready. Place dough on slightly floured surface and knead dough for about a minute, place back in the floured bowl and cover with towel to let rise for about 30 minutes or until doubled in size.
  3. Divide the dough in half on lightly flour surface and roll out one half at a time to a good 9x12 rectangle. Roll up jelly roll style ( long way) and place long way on a greased cookie sheet. Repeat with the other half of dough and place on same pan. It's best to leave a 2 inch space in the center between the two loaves. Score each loaf 3 times with sharp knife across the top. Let sit another 30 minutes with towel over to keep warm or until it's doubled . Bake at 375 for about 30 minutes or until golden brown and or knife inserted comes out clean.

To make the Pizza, I would make this bread earlier in the day as it needs to cool off before you mess with it. Once it’s cooled you are going to cut each loaf in half , and flip over the top so both crusts are on the baking pan. So one loaf now needs one full pan.

Next you are going to put your toppings on. I spread Pizza sauce with minced garlic, then cheese and our veggies. I did not measure this out one bit so I just put what looked like a good amount. I think possibly I used about 1 cup to a cup and a half per loaf ( cut in half of course so two halves) Garlic was a lot, let’s just say it like that. You pick your own toppings, we used all veggies.

Oven should be at 400F. Bake for about 25 minutes or until the cheese is golden, , and or how you like it. Some of our pizza took longer then 25 as the oven just enjoys being tricky but it really shouldn’t take longer then 30 minutes.  Once it’s done take it out and slice the way you like it. I cut about ever 2 inches for better eating. The bread was crispy and perfect! This was the best French Bread Pizza I ever had , and was so happy how it turned out!

ENJOY!
